On 24 November1940 at 6.30pm German Luftwaffe bombers began several bombing waves of the city of Bristol dropping around 12,000 incendiary bombs and 160 tons of high-explosive bombs. Within an hour over 70 fires had started. Park Street was particularly badly hit and it was where Stephen lost his life in the course of his duty. Stephen was one of 207 civilians who were killed that night. He was buried in the grounds of the church where his father was rector.
