Walter was born in Kingswood, the son and only child of a bootmaker. In July 1912 Walter's father left for Sydney Australia and in June 1913 Walter and his mother followed.

Walter enlisted in the Australian Army but the details of his war service are not known. However, he died as the result of war injuries at the town of Kootingal, New South Wales, Australia.
