Walter was born at Yate, the son of a station master who was working at Yate station in 1881. In 1889 Walter was also employed by the Midland Railway as an office boy at Yate Railway Station and at that time was recorded as being 5’ 0” tall. Two years later in 1891, he was working as an engine fitter and lodging in Stapleton. In 1905 Walter married Annie Walter, the daughter of an engineer, in Stapleton and at that time Walter’s occupation was recorded as marine engineer.

On December 16th, 1917, the British steamer SS Bristol City, on a voyage from Bristol to New York was sunk by a German submarine about 250 miles WSW of Ushant (Ouessant). 30 men including Walter were killed.
