Wilfred Williams Bleaken was born and raised on Hawkesbury Common

He served with the 1st Battalion, London Regiment and was posted to France in June 1917. He was wounded during the Third Battle of Ypres but recovered and returned to his battalion before the end of the year. On 21 March 1918, he was officially posted as ‘missing’ at the start of the German Spring offensive and died as a prisoner of war in June 1918

Wilfred Williams Bleaken is remembered on the Chipping Sodbury War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, now at Yate and District Heritage Centre under Hawkesbury
