William Bennett was born in 1892 and lived at Petty France. He volunteered in September 1914, one of the earliest volunteers from Hawkesbury, leaving behind his job as a gardener. He served with the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. On 25th-26th September 1916, he was killed as his battalion moved up to support an attack on Thiepval village on the Somme.

William Bennett is remembered on the Chipping Sodbury and District Memorial Cottage Hospital board, now at Yate and District Heritage Centre under Hawkesbury.
