Further information:

William George Bedggood (sometimes spelt Bedgood) was born in about March 1895 in Wickwar. His parents were Henry and Helena Alice (nee Rathbone) Bedggood. He had six siblings called Thomas Henry, Ernest, Alice Maud, Laurence, John and Arthur James. The family moved to Rangeworthy before 1901. William’s father was a grocer and he had also been born in Wickwar

William joined the "A" Battery of the 52nd Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery as a gunner. He rose to the rank of Serjeant. He was deployed to France on 9th July 1915. He died in April 1918 at the age of 23. Given the date of his death it is possible that he was fighting in the Battle of Lys. He is buried at La Targette British Cemetery in Neuville-St.Vaast in France. He is commemorated on the Rangeworthy Parish Church Memorial and on the Chipping Sodbury Cottage Hospital Memorial Board (now at Yate and District Heritage Centre). He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals
