William Prior was born in 1876 in Wick. His parents were William and Martha Prior. He was brother to Frank, Florence, Alfred and Martha. He married Annie Jane Greenwood in 1906 and in 1911 they were living at Nibley Mill, Yate where he worked as a miller. His widowed mother lived at Corn Mills, Old Sodbury. His wife later lived at Court Farm, Horton, Chipping Sodbury

He joined the 100th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps and worked as an aircraft mechanic. He died in April 1917 at the age of 40. He is buried at Avesnes-Le-Comte Communal Cemetery Extension in France

He is remembered on Yate Church Lych Gate and on the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Yate
