{"id":21946,"date":"2019-06-25T09:58:00","date_gmt":"2019-06-25T08:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.southglos.gov.uk\/newsroom\/?p=21946"},"modified":"2019-06-25T10:47:43","modified_gmt":"2019-06-25T09:47:43","slug":"scam-awareness-week-launch-warns-of-the-heartless-scammer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.southglos.gov.uk\/newsroom\/community\/scam-awareness-week-launch-warns-of-the-heartless-scammer\/","title":{"rendered":"Scam awareness week launch warns of the heartless scammer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">South Gloucestershire Council is backing a campaign to highlight the devastating impact that scams have on people\u2019s lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">Scams Awareness Week launches today (Monday 24 June) and is being run by Trading Standards South West\u2019s (TSSW) newly relaunched ScamWise service, which aims to provide everyone with advice on how to not be duped by a scam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">The harrowing tale of Iris, who sold all her belongings and sent \u00a34,000 to her internet-love-interest is being used to warn others of the dangers of scams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">South West based Iris took to online dating, upon the breakdown of her second marriage as she was feeling lonely and isolated. It seemed that hope was around the corner as she quickly established an online relationship with \u201cPeter\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">However, it wasn\u2019t long before Iris\u2019 family began to have doubts when Iris started sending Peter money. When quizzed about Peter\u2019s requests for money by her daughter Marilyn, Iris became \u201cangry \u2013 but continued to send money to Peter\u201d recalled Marilyn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">She said, \u201cShe moved away from the dating website and used Skype to speak with him. Then things took a terrible turn when Peter told her to sell all her belongings \u2013 which mum did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">\u201cShe went to Leeds to meet him, but he didn\u2019t arrive. The police tried to assist, but she refused any help. Peter was now completely controlling her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">Marilyn soon realised that Peter was not the only one her mum was sending money to, and these scammers were targeting Iris due to her vulnerability as she was undiagnosed bi-polar at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">\u201cI felt I had nowhere to turn. I didn\u2019t know how to help my mum, and neither did anyone else, these people target and spend hours, days, months and years grooming their victims and don\u2019t care about the ramifications this has on entire families,\u201d recalled Marilyn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">Iris sadly died following a stroke in 2017 which Marilyn believes was brought on by the stress of the realisation that her online relationships were a scam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">Romance scams such as this are just one of the many scams that people across the region fall victim to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">The figures from the Office for National Statistics show you are twice as likely to be a victim of fraud than any other crime. Scams cost the UK economy up to \u00a310bn a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">South Gloucestershire Council, Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Rachael Hunt said: \u201cScams have a devastating personal and financial impact on all those affected. Scams Awareness Week is an opportunity to encourage our local communities to be vigilant to scams and help them to identify and prevent these types of fraud happening in the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">During Scams Awareness Week TSSW will show the South West community how to recognise all types of scams and know how to avoid being tricked by the scammers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">The TSWW website offers many free resources including a guide to help people if they, or a family member, are being affected by a scam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 150%;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">To access the information and download the free guide, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tssw.org.uk\/scamwise\">www.tssw.org.uk\/scamwise<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Gloucestershire Council is backing a campaign to highlight the devastating impact that scams have on people\u2019s lives.
