South Gloucestershire Council Libraries are inviting local children, aged between 4 and 11 to head to their library this summer to join the \u2018Wild World Heroes\u2019, Summer Reading Challenge 2021.<\/p>\n
Our Libraries and The Reading Agency have partnered with World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) for this year\u2019s Challenge, which is a celebration of nature and positive action to support the environment. It is free to take part and runs until 11 September in libraries across South Gloucestershire.<\/p>\n
The Challenge supports children to become more independent readers and improves their confidence in reading over the summer break. It also supports positive mental wellbeing, boosting children\u2019s confidence and self-esteem.<\/p>\n
To get involved, children sign-up at their local library, read six books over the summer holiday and receive stickers to complete a \u2018Wild World Heroes\u2019 collector\u2019s poster. A medal and certificate are presented to those who complete it and as the Challenge progresses, children discover how they can make a positive difference to the environment.<\/p>\n
With exclusive incentives to collect and plenty of brilliant books to enjoy, \u2018Wild World Heroes\u2019 is the perfect summer activity to build young readers\u2019 skills and confidence.<\/p>\n
South Gloucestershire Council\u2019s Cabinet Member for Communities and Local Place, Cllr Rachael Hunt said: \u201cIn 2020 our Libraries had more participants in the Summer Reading Challenge than any other Local Authority in the South West with 2,295 children taking part and developing their reading skills through the school holidays. It has been hugely popular over the years, and we are delighted to be able to continue delivering the Challenge for the children of South Gloucestershire.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur libraries play a key role in our communities, and I encourage all children to take part in this exciting scheme and continue to discover the joy and fun of reading and develop their literacy over the summer holidays.\u201d<\/p>\n
Children can also pick up a free craft bag of animal themed activities to make at home when they join. Lincoln, aged 7 collected his bag from Emersons Green Library this week. He said: \u201cThe Summer Reading Challenge is fun and I really look forward to it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Challenge is open to all primary school aged children, but this year there is also the Mini Challenge which is specially designed for pre-school children, so little ones can get involved too.<\/p>\n
