{"id":26253,"date":"2026-05-29T14:17:05","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T13:17:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.southglos.gov.uk\/newsroom\/?p=26253"},"modified":"2026-05-29T14:17:05","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T13:17:05","slug":"new-action-plan-launched-to-strengthen-south-gloucestershires-food-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.southglos.gov.uk\/newsroom\/environment\/climate-nature-emergency\/new-action-plan-launched-to-strengthen-south-gloucestershires-food-system\/","title":{"rendered":"New action plan launched to strengthen South Gloucestershire\u2019s food system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local food organisations, businesses and community groups have come together to launch a new plan to strengthen South Gloucestershire\u2019s food system and improve access to affordable, healthy food for residents.<\/p>\n<p>The South Gloucestershire Local Food Partnership Action Plan 2026\u20132028 sets out a coordinated approach to tackling food-related challenges, which include rising costs, food insecurity and the impact of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The plan includes 26 actions to be delivered over the next two years \u2013 17 led jointly by partners and nine delivered by individual organisations \u2013 focusing on increasing local food availability, supporting businesses and reducing food waste.<\/p>\n<p>The plan has been shaped by local evidence and a survey of more than 1,500 South Gloucestershire residents, highlighting growing concerns around food affordability, availability and health.<\/p>\n<p>The South Gloucestershire Local Food Partnership now includes around 80 members representing more than 30 organisations, including farmers, growers, food businesses, community groups, councils and researchers. Together, they aim to build a more resilient local food system that supports people, the environment and the local economy.<\/p>\n<p>The action plan aims to deliver practical benefits for residents, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More locally grown fresh food available across the area<\/li>\n<li>Support to help households reduce costs, including cutting food waste<\/li>\n<li>Access to food skills to improve health and employment opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Stronger local food businesses supporting jobs and the local economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The partnership is also already supporting residents by promoting local food producers and helping schools engage children in food growing activities.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Louise Harris, cabinet member for the climate and nature emergency at South Gloucestershire Council, said: \u201cFood systems locally and nationally are under increasing pressure. Rising food costs, challenges for growers, and uncertain global supplies driven by conflict, climate change and nature loss are all affecting residents and businesses. At the same time, diet and access to healthy food remain key public health concerns.<br \/>\n\u201cThis action plan sets out a clear and practical route to strengthening South Gloucestershire\u2019s food system. It brings together organisations and communities with a shared commitment to making local food more accessible, affordable and sustainable.
