Distinguished Service Order
Instituted in 1886, to reward officers (usually of the rank of Major or above) for distinguished service in time of war. It was available to officers of the Royal Navy, Army and RAF (after 1918).
The medal was issued unnamed.
A second award of the DSO is noted by a bar placed on the medal ribbon.
