John had 3 younger brothers and an older sister. John’s own military experience was briefly with the Norfolk Regiment before he was subjected to the standard inter-regimental transfers. He died of wounds on 5th September 1918. John's father was a serving soldier until shortly before 1914 and John was the grand-nephew of a Crimean veteran
