Arthur was born in Hanham. A middle child and the eldest son of a labourer, he had four older sisters and three younger brothers. Arthur's father joined the army along with Arthur and was killed in action 15 months earlier. Arthur was a member of the Baptist Church Brotherhood and was employed by the printing company Burleigh Ltd in Lewins Mead, Bristol.

Arthur served with "B" Company, 6th Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment.

Arthur's regiment was mobilised to France in July 1915 and was engaged in various actions on the Western Front including the Battle of Loos and the Battles of the Somme. Arthur was killed in action during the Battles of the Somme (Jul 1, 1916 – Nov 18, 1916) which resulted in only a minor territorial gain but at a cost of 620,000 allied casualties. Regina Trench where Arthur is buried, was a German earthwork captured and cleared just 2 days before Arthur's death.
