Arthur was born in Hawkesbury, the son of a farm carter and the second eldest of four children with two brothers and a sister.
Arthur enlisted before his 18th birthday in what was known as the Young Soldiers Battalion which was formed in October 1917 and based in Rollestone on the Salisbury plain from January 1918 until the end of the war. Arthur died from pneumonia in the military camp hospital two days before the Armistice. Arthur served with the 53rd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment.
Arthur is buried at Acton Turville (St. Mary) Churchyard and commemorated on Acton Turville Memorial and the Chipping Sodbury Memorial at Yate Heritage Centre.
