Alan attended Two Mile Hill Primary School followed by Clark’s College in Bristol. He left school to work at the Bristol Aeroplane Company then joined the Fleet Air Arm at the age of 18 as a mechanic. He was stationed at St. Merryn – HMS Vulture, Fleet Air Arm Station, Cornwall and died when a Firefly aircraft in which he was a passenger crashed near the station.
