At the beginning of 1942 the 1st Battalion Gloucestershires joined the Burma frontier force whose task it was to guard then finally blow up the oil refineries and storage tanks to prevent them getting into Japanese hands. The Gloucestershires remained in Burma while the rest of the force retreated by river to Calcutta on March 7th and the Japanese continued their advance on Rangoon. Albert died 3 weeks later but how he met his death is not clear.
