Further information:
Albert's mother was a single parent and Albert was born in Bedminster. He was raised by his grandparents - his grandfather who was a storekeeper and his grandmother who was a laundress. Albert's grandfather died when he was 8 years old and in 1939, he was living in Filton with his widowed grandmother.
On the day of his death Albert was serving aboard the British Naval Destroyer, The Exmouth, which was escorting the British motor merchant Cyprian Prince, when she was torpedoed at 05.35 hours by the German submarine U-22 off Tarbett Ness in the Moray Firth. The Exmouth was hit in the bow on the starboard side and sank with all hands within three minutes. The captain, 15 officers and 173 ratings including Albert, were all killed. There were no survivors.
