On the day of his death, Johnny was serving aboard the British Steam Merchant ‘Lackenby’, on route from New York to Loch Ewe Scotland, carrying a cargo of 8000 tons of phosphate. On 25 Jan 1943 the vessel, a straggler from convoy SC-117, was hit by two torpedoes from U-boat U-624 and sank south of Cape Farewell. The master, 38 crew members and seven gunners, including Johnny, were lost. There were no survivors.
