Further information:

Albert was born in Wolverhampton, the son of a brewer and beer retailer, and the middle child of five children with two brothers and two sisters. Albert's younger brother George died age 2 and Albert remained single whilst all of his remaining siblings married. In 1911 Albert was living with his sister Myra and her husband and on his death, he left all of his effects to Myra.

Gilbert's battalion ("C" Company, 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment) mobilised to France in December 1914 and fought in various actions on the Western Front including the Battles of the Somme and the Battle of Messines. Gilbert was killed in action ten days after the Battle of Messines. It is likely that he was a casualty of the day to day trench warfare which accounted for around 300 deaths daily throughout the war. The cemetery where he is buried was used for front line burials and was named China Wall after one of the trenches, a communication trench.
