Albert joined the 1st Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment from Bristol. After basic training the Battalion became part of the 3rd Infantry Brigade and proceeded to Ypres. By the second week of November 1914 they were in Heronthage Wood near Hooge to the east of Ypres where they were bivouacked near Bellewaerde Farm close to the chateau at Hooge. Their adversary in this the first Battle of Ypres was the Prussian Guard
Unfortunately, the Battalion kept no detailed diary during this period but it is known that Albert perished at the age of 27 during a Prussian attack on the 8th of November 1914.
