Albert was born on 23 May 1894 (baptised at St. Barnabas Church on 15 July 1894). He married Ethel (nee Brewer) at St Barnabas Church on 27 November 1915).

Albert enlisted in the Plymouth Division, 4th Royal Marine Battalion, Royal Marine Light Infantry on 26 April 1911. He initially served on several ships, mainly HMS Conqueror, and was present at the Battle of Jutland on 31.5.1916. From February 1918 he served with the Royal Marine Battalion and was part of the Zeebrugge raid on 23 April 1918 where he was wounded in action. The Zeebrugge action saw the award of 8 Victoria Crosses.
