Further information:
Albert was born in St. George, Bristol, the son of a coal miner and a middle child of seven children, with five brothers and a sister. In 1911 Albert was working as an errand boy.
Albert's battalion (the 2nd/5th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment) mobilised for war and landed in France in May 1916, where they engaged in various actions on the Western Front including The German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line and The Battle of Langemarck. Albert was killed in action during the Battle of Bethune, one of the Battles of the Lys (7th – 29th April 1918) which was a victory for the allies but at a cost of 119,000 casualties. Albert's body was never identified and the Loos Memorial where he is remembered, commemorates over 20,000 officers and men who have no known grave and who fell in an area near the River Lys between September 1915 and the end of the war.
