Albert was born in Hawkesbury Upton, the youngest child and only son of a school master and a school mistress. He had three older sisters, one of whom was also a teacher. Albert was an organist as well as a teacher at an elementary school in Birmingham. He married Emma Harding in 1899.

Albert served on the Home Front in Tyneside and died in First Northern General Military Hospital Newcastle upon Tyne. His cause of his death was recorded as laryngeal obstruction but how it came about was not specified.
