Further information:
Albert was born at Oldland Common, the son of a labourer and the second youngest of ten children with seven brothers and two sisters. Albert's father died when Albert was aged 12.
Albert enlisted in the Gloucestershire Regiment and his battalion (the 10th) mobilised to France in August 1915, joining with the 1st Brigade of the 1st Division to engage in various actions on the Western Front. In September 1915 they fought in the Battle of Loos, but were then not involved in any significant engagement until the latter part of 1916. However, Albert reportedly died of wounds in May 1916 and may therefore have been a victim of trench warfare, which was responsible for 300 deaths per day throughout the war.
