Alexander was born in Hanham the son of a bootmaker and a middle child of ten children with three sisters and six brothers. In 1911 Alexander was working as a collier but immediately pre-war he worked on the trams.
Alexander joined up with one of his younger brothers on the outbreak of war whilst a second brother also saw active service. In November 1915 Alexander’s battalion (the 22nd) was mobilised for war and landed at Boulogne and as part of the 2nd Division were engaged in various actions on the Western front. He was wounded in August of 1916 during The Battle of Delville Wood and came home but returned to the front in November. Alexander lost his life three months later during Operations on the Ancre (11 January – 13 March 1917) which was a British Victory at the cost of over 2000 casualties. Alexander was initially reported as missing which was later changed to killed in action although his body was never found. The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, where Alexander is remembered, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and who have no known grave.
