Further information:

Alfred was born in St. George in Bristol, the son of a shoemaker and the second youngest of four children with two older brothers and a younger sister. Alfred’s father died when he was two years old and his mother who was a boot machinist, brought the family up on her own. Alfred was a school teacher at Kingswood Boys School and he may have previously been a pupil there. He married Blanche Turner at the beginning of 1904 and their only child Percival was born later that year.

Alfred enlisted in the Royal Engineers in 1914 and as part of the 5th Field Survey Company was responsible for surveying the ground, creating maps and identifying the position of the enemy. Alfred was killed in action during the Battle of Passchendaele (the third battle of Ypres) which lasted from 31st July to 10th November 1917 and resulted in combined casualties estimated to be around 800,000 for both allies and Germans.
