Alfred was born in Dover, the son of a Civil Servant and the youngest of four children with three older sisters.
Alfred served with the 35th Fortress Company, Royal Engineers. He was captured on 15th February 1942 during the Battle of Singapore (8–15 February 1942) which was a Japanese victory during which 5,000 allies were killed or wounded and 80,000 prisoners were taken. Alfred was held prisoner of war by the Japanese and died from dysentery in captivity at a POW camp on Formosa (Taiwan) where he was initially buried at Rinrakutomon Cemetery Takao. He was reburied after the war at Hong Kong in 1947.
