Alfred was born in St. George in Bristol, the son of a shoemaker, a middle child of seven with two brothers and four sisters. He was employed by the Bank Road Boot factory and a member of the Kingswood Moravian Brotherhood. Alfred married Florence Britton in 1915.

Alfred enlisted with the Wiltshire Regiment in 1914, later transferring to the 2nd/5th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. He lost his life during the Battle of Passchendaele (the third battle of Ypres) which lasted from 31st July to 10th November 1917 and resulted in combined casualties estimated to be around 800,000 for both allies and Germans. Alfred died from critical wounds that he received whilst carrying a wounded comrade to hospital.
