Alfred served with 139 Squadron. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Alfred’s Bristol Blenheim took off from Horsham St. Faith airfield Norfolk at 18.35 hrs for a night raid on Ostend. However, the aircraft was clearly in trouble and turned back arriving more than an hour before the other aircraft. The crew released a distress flare as the Blenheim circled and then it collided with the tops of some trees and crashed at 19.59 hrs at Manor Farm, Little Plumstead, 5 miles NE of Norwich. Alfred died along with the pilot but a 3rd member of the crew survived.
