Ambrose was born in Oldland, Bristol the son of a lime burner and the middle child of 9 with 2 sisters and 6 brothers. He followed his father into the same trade and married Martha Kate Sarah Keen in 1908.
Ambrose served with the 16th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment.
Ambrose died from wounds most probably sustained in the Battle of the Scarpe (A Battle of Arras) about 3 weeks earlier. Two of Ambrose’s nephews, William and Ambrose were both killed in action. William earlier in the same month as his uncle, probably during the same battle, and Ambrose died two months later.
