Ambrose was born in Kingswood the son of a stableman and a middle child of eleven children with three brothers and seven sisters.

Ambrose's battalion (the 13th (Service) Battalion (Forest of Dean Pioneer) Gloucestershire Regiment) mobilised to France in March 1916 and fought in The Battles of The Somme. Ambrose was killed in action on the first day of the Battles of Ypres, during The Battle of Pilckem Ridge (31/07/1917). The Battle was a victory for the allies and the Ridge was taken, but at a cost of 32,000 casualties including Ambrose. Ambrose is buried in the cemetery adjacent to the Advance Dressing Station where he would have been taken when he fell.
