On the day of Archibald’s death at 22.37 hours, U-boat U-260 fired torpedoes at convoy ONS-154, in which Archibald’s ship was travelling. This happened about 900 miles west of Cape Finisterre and only the Empire Wagtail was hit. The master, 35 crew members including Archibald, and eight gunners were lost. There were no survivors.
