Further information:

Arnold was born in Derbyshire, and sometime later moved to Kingswood. He married Mabel Elizabeth Cotton just a few weeks before he left to join the 16th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment in Italy. The battalion was involved in carrying out patrol and counter battery work rather than any large-scale actions. On the 15th March Arnold and some other men, were occupying the rear trenches when they came under attack. The men rushed for cover but a bullet struck Arnold's head and killed him outright. Arnold was a new recruit it was his first week in the trenches and it was his only experience of war. He became his Regiment's first casualty in Italy.
