Further information:
Arthur and his father were both gardeners at Yate House (now Rockwood House). He served in the 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He fought with the Indian Army and died during the battle of Imphal defending the hills along the Tamu Road in Burma from the Japanese. He was initially buried near one of them - Scraggy Hill, and post-war his body was exhumed and transferred across the border to where he was reburied in Imphal War Cemetery in India.
