Arthur was born in Kingswood and was the only son of a labourer. He had a younger sister Irene who was born 20 years after him. Arthur married Minnie Mabel Lucy Hawkins in the spring of 1916.

Arthur served in the Royal Engineers and died three months after the war had ended from septic pneumonia and cardiac failure. His death was registered in Bristol.
