Arthur enlisted in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1924 and during the war served in France in 1940 with the British Expeditionary Force. Arthur served with the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who fought heroically at St Venant, without adequate anti-tank weapons, holding up two German Armoured Divisions. They suffered very heavy losses and were finally overwhelmed. During this fighting, Arthur was reported as missing in action on 26th May 1940, then recorded as Killed in Action in March 1941.

Name incorrectly stated on Hambrook and Frenchay memorials as Ernest Bainton.
