Arthur was born in Aust, a middle child of five children with three brothers and a sister. His mother Elizabeth was a single parent and the family lived with his grandparents. On his marriage banns his father is listed as George, which was the name of his grandfather, an agricultural labourer. Two of his brothers Percy and Victor also saw war service. Arthur married May Clark in 1923 and they had two children. Arthur died in 1945 and the cause of his death was unlikely to have been war-related.
