Further information:

Arthur was born in Kingswood, the son of a French polisher and a middle child of six children with three sisters and two brothers. Arthur attended St. Simon's School in Easton, Bristol.

Arthur’s battalion (the 7th, Glosters) was mobilised to Gallipoli in June of 1915 and landed at Anzac at the beginning of August. Arthur died within a few days of landing, during the Battles of Suvla Bay (6th – 15th August 1915). The Battles of Suvla were a victory for the Turks during which the allies suffered 21,500 casualties. Arthur was originally listed as missing which was later changed to killed in action but his body was never found. The Helles Memorial, where he is remembered, serves the dual function of Commonwealth battle memorial for the whole Gallipoli campaign and place of commemoration for many of those Commonwealth servicemen who died there and have no known grave. Over 20,000 names are commemorated on this memorial.
