Further information:

The 2nd Battalion was part of the British Expeditionary Force that was involved in the Battle of France following Germany's invasion of the Low Countries. The 2nd battalion suffered heavy losses on 19th May 1940 mostly as a result of an airstrike. They took part in the defensive screen protecting the Dunkirk evacuation which began on 24th May. Arthur is buried near Dunkirk so it is likely that he was killed sometime during this period but records are unable to give a precise date for his death. He died sometime 10 May 1940 and 6 February 1941. Arthur’s father also died (in 1916) from wounds he sustained whilst serving in the Great War.

Forces War Records show his date of death as 10/05/1940. Casualty List No. 530. Previously shown on Casualty List No. 237 as Missing. Handwritten note on original source states 'as Killed'.
