Further information:
Arthur was born on Malta, but his mother died when he was 12 months old and in 1901, he and his older brother Frederick were living with his grand-parents, Isaac and Mary Hodges, in Kingswood, where he would have attended Kingswood School. In 1911 Arthur was working as a groom and gardener for a Vicar in Monmouthshire at Coedkernew Rectory, Newport, but later moved to Grantham to work as a farmer.
Sometime after the outbreak of war Arthur enlisted in the Machine Gun Corps and served in France during the war years. He survived his war service and in June of 1919 transferred to the Royal Tank Corps where he served for a further 20 years and rose to the rank of Sergeant Major before being discharged in March 1937. Arthur married Elsie May Williams in 1923 and they had several children. In 1939 he was working as a wages clerk and living in Birmingham and where he died of natural causes.
