Arthur attended Chipping Sodbury Grammar School from 1934 to 1939. In 1937 he successfully completed an aircraft apprentice examination and was offered a place in the RAF. At the time of his death he was stationed at RAF Melbourne Yorkshire flying Handley Page Halifax bombers. His aircraft Halifax JD200 took part in Operation Hydra which was a bombing campaign aimed at the Peememunde Army Research Centre in Poland where V1 and V2 bombs were being produced. The aircraft never returned from the mission and Arthur and the other 7 crew members were listed as ‘Lost without Trace’
