Arthur served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, his regiment fought in the Italian Campaign alongside the Canadians in Italy to free Rimini from German occupation. Arthur was killed on the 1st day of The Battle of Rimini which took place between 13th and 21st September 1944 during Operation Olive, the main Allied offensive on the Gothic Line. During the fighting Arthur was killed and initially buried in the village of Misano.
