On the day of his death, Benjamin was serving aboard the White Crest, a British Steam Merchant ship, travelling as part of convoy ONS-67 on route from Belfast to Buenos Aires and carrying a cargo of coal and coke. At 08.35 hours, The White Crest, which had become detached from the main convoy following a heavy gale, was hit by two torpedoes from U-boat U-162, capsized and sank after eight minutes, at a position southeast of St. John’s in the North Atlantic. The master, 40 crew members and six gunners, including Benjamin were all lost. There were no survivors.
