Bert Knapp was born in 1894 in Watley’s End in Winterbourne. His parents were James and Edith Knapp of Crossley Cottages in Winterbourne. His siblings were Elizabeth, Gladys and Percy. It is possible that he may have had more younger siblings. His father was a navvy and had been born in Winterbourne. Bert’s mother was born in Cirencester

Bert joined the 7th Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment and became a serjeant. He was Killed in Action on 1 July 1916 at the age of 22. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and Face 2 C.) for the dead of the Somme in France
