Charles was born on 22 June 1876 in Ystrad, Rhondda Valley, Wales. He married Annie Brown) on 5 October 1903. Charles and Annie had one daughter Marjorie K Poole born 21 June 1905. The 1911 Census records show Annie and Marjorie living on Teewell Hill, Staple Hill, but Charles was on leave and visiting his parents who had moved to Hay Mills near Birmingham. The records suggest that Elizabeth could have been Charles's step mother, but this has not been researched.
Charles enlisted in the Royal Navy on 24 July 1899 initially for 12 years. He served on numerous ships joining HMS Queen Mary on 4 September 1913 and served on her until she was sunk at the Battle of Jutland on 31 June 1916 with the loss of 1,266 Officers and ratings.
Charles Poole is commemorated on the Christ Church Downend Memorial and the Staple Hill (Page Park) Memorial.
