Charles was born at Acton Turville, the son of a Railway labourer and the eldest child of three children with a younger brother and sister. His mother died when he was aged 12 and in 1911 Charles was living with his father and siblings at his grandfather's house and was already employed as a labourer at the age of 13.

Charles served with "A" Battery. 162nd Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery. Charles was wounded in France whilst serving on the Western Front and was awarded a wound stripe in May 1918. He was killed in action during The Hundred Days Offensive (8 August to 11 November 1918) which was a decisive allied victory bringing about the end of the war but resulted in over a million allied casualties.

Charles William Miles is buried at Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, Somme, France. Commemorated on Acton Turville Memorial and Yate Hospital Memorial Board.
