Charles served with the 13th (Service) Battalion, his battalion mobilised to Belgium in March 1916 and during that year, fought in the Battles of the Somme. Charles was killed in action during The Battle of Passchendaele (31 July - 6 November 1917) which resulted in combined casualties estimated to be around 800,000 for both allies and Germans. After the armistice Charles’s body was moved from its first resting place and reburied at the cemetery near Hooge chateau which had been the scene of much bitter fighting throughout the war.
