Charles Gardener was one of the first from Hawkesbury to enlist in the summer of 1914. He served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment. He saw a lot of action, first in Gallipoli and later in France. He was reported as missing on 21st March 1918 and later confirmed to have been Killed in Action on this day.
