At 08.35 hours, the vessel, which had become detached from the main convoy following a heavy gale, was hit by two torpedoes from U-boat U-162, capsized and sank after eight minutes, at a position southeast of St. John’s in the North Atlantic. The master, 40 crew members and six gunners, including Charles were all lost. There were no survivors.
