Further information:

Charles was born in Norwood Surrey, the eldest of two sons of a coal merchant. He was just 8 years old when his father died. Two years later in 1909 his mother married Francis Martin and that same year they had a daughter, Frances, who was Charles' half-sister. The 1911 census shows that Charles aged 12 and his younger brother Bertie aged 11 had been placed in Mullers Orphan Houses Ashley Down in Bristol.

During the war, Charles served on the home front and died in Bristol General Hospital in the last days of the war. It's not possible to say why he was in Bristol at the time of his death, what the cause of his death was or why he was buried in Winterbourne Down.

He left all of his personal effects to his mother who by that time was widowed, Charles' stepfather having died in Flanders, the year before Charles.
